Dear Trail Clearing Gang,
I had been calling and calling Mabel to wish her a
happy new year and no one would answer the phone. Then today
I called her son Mitchell, who lives next door, and he gave me
the devastating news. Mabel is unresponsive, can't talk and
does not recognize anyone. This has been
going on for three days. St. Francis hospice has been caring
for her at the house along with her daughter, two sons, and two
granddaughters.
This
afternoon a number of us went to visit Mabel at her home and it was a
rather sad yet happy visit. Sad to see that Mabel will not be
with us very long and yet happy to see that she is comfortable with
herself and she even uttered these few words in front of all of us, "I
am happy." At times though you could also see the frustration
in her face when she tries to talk and she just could not do it.
When Laura in her loud voice said, "no worry Ma, we'll take
care of the trails," Mabel beamed. It was an on and off again
kind of communication. She got to taste the frosting from
Gordon's birthday cake, and opened her mouth slightly for Connie to
give her another tasting. I noticed she had a difficult time
swallowing water. She also chose not to be hooked up to the
oxygen tank nor was there any hookup to an intravenous feeding system.
So gang just to let you guys know what is happening with Ma.
I left my number with the family and I'll email you guys when
I hear otherwise from them.

Dear trail clearing gang,
Our beloved Mabel just passed way a few minutes ago. I am so
happy to have seen her along with others the other day and surrounding
her bed when she was able to utter the words, "I am
happy." She was already at peace with herself and at
acceptance. Tomorrow I will pick up the list
of trails where she wanted us to eventually scatter her ashes along
with Moki's. Watch your
email or the newspaper for dates and times for the scattering of the
ashes.
