I started clearing occasionally in 2001 and regularly from around
2005. Until recently Mabel was always there to guide the newcomers...
offering advice on which plants to cut and where the most work would be
needed. I was always amazed that, despite no longer hiking to the
summit on most clearings, she still knew every trail as if she had been
there only yesterday. She also knew all of the connecting and alternate
trails in the area. I think there is more than one trail described as
"Mabel's Trail".
A couple of years ago I
got a call from a lady requesting help in finding her dog which got lost
during a hike in the Palolo area. They called me because my name had
been on the HTMC schedule recently for the Ka'au Crater hike and they
thought I would be able to
help. I
referred them to Mabel and based on their description, Mabel was able
to tell exactly where the dog would be. They next day, it was found in
that exact area. I am not sure how she knew.
She was an amazing woman
and an asset to the club. She will be missed.
