Oct 5 Sun 8AM WAIAU

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waiau)

Enjoy a graded trail at first, then the terrain becomes more and more strenuous and overgrown.  Only strong and determined hikers can expect to summit and still get out before dark.  Stop and turn around when you’ve had enough. Coordinators Grant & Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.

Oct 11 Sat 8AM LANIPO

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaimukï)

Take a walk on the wild side of the mountains in the heart of the city at the top of Maunalani Heights.  You will gain elevation swiftly reaching the Ko’olau summit in record time.  The beginning of the trail is a bit hot and dry with a rocky descent, but soon you'll be passing through a cool, forested area and be rewarded with windswept views at the summit! Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 263-8330.

Oct 12 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY MAKAPUU TOM-TOM

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at the Clubhouse

(4 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Makapu’u)

We’ll shuttle to Makapu’u Point where we start the scenic traverse of the eastern Ko’olau Summit.  Expect a rocky trail with lots of ups and downs and the ever present precipitous plummet to your right.  Descend to Waimanalo on the somewhat steep Tom-Tom trail.

What could be better than to end this hike at our HTMC Clubhouse.  Enjoy a post-hike activity of your choosing (bring some refreshments, take a swim, talk story with your hiking buddies). Coordinator Karen Liliker, ph 349-8336.

Oct 19 Sun 8:30AM WAI’ANAE RAMBLE

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Wai’anae Steve’s

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Waianae)

Ramble across most of Wai’anae Valley, from the Lualualei overlook to Ala Kepau ridge (where the road and trail end).  You'll see coffee, ironwood, lemon eucalyptus, allspice, sisal, and other strange sights such as streams w/running water, terraces built by the ancient Hawaiians and the house site of the Wai’anae Plantation manager.  Just follow the yellow markers, or you may get lost at the many intersections. Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

Oct 25 Sat 8AM NU’UANU

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Hillside/Nu’uanu)

Enjoy the forest as you climb the Judd Trail to the Tantalus area, and then the Nu’uanu Trail to the reservoir overlook.  Out and back the same way. Coordinator Sandra Klein, ph 263-8330.

Oct 26 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KULEPEAMOA RIDGE

No Meeting @ Palace – Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Niu Valley)

This short, but difficult loop hike has it all - steep climbing, narrow ridge walking, native plant and bird viewing, and quiet valley strolling. Watch for a key junction, or you could end up somewhat out of place in a gated community. Coordinator Jay Feldman, ph 842-9596.

Nov 2 Sun 8:30AM MALAEKAHANA RIDGE TRAIL MAINTENANCE

No Meeting @ Palace

(10 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/La’ie)

Let’s all get together for a work day on Malaekahana Ridge. Do your part to help maintain the trails we hike, while at the same time, work side-by-side with your friendly, sweaty, muddy, stinky hiking buddies. The camaraderie is infectious, and the pot luck at Kokololio Beach Park afterwards should be great. There’s no hike this weekend, so your peak experience may be a sense of accomplishment for a job well-done. Call Mike Algiers for more details at 422-1048.

Nov 8 Sat 8AM WILIWILINUI

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Wai’alae)

This short but steep hike takes you to the Ko’olau Summit, overlooking Waimanalo and portions of the windward coast.  Sections of the trail are eroded and may be slippery.  Due to parking limitations at the trailhead, carpooling from Wai’alae Iki Park will be required.  Please do not drive up the hill early, or you may jeopardize the outing for the entire group. Coordinator Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

Nov 9 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY CASTLE

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 50

Reservations accepted beginning 8AM, Oct 27

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge-Contour/Punalu’u)

Once again we'll climb the scenic switchbacks to the notch, cross Kaluanui Stream, and head for the waterfall overlook and the Ko’olau summit. Be prepared for stream crossings, serious mudholes, and a sometimes rough and narrow trail. Castle country is wild, rugged, and often inhospitable. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Nov 16 Sun 8AM PU’U KEAHI A KAHOE

(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)

This is one of our "wow" hikes - a strenuous loop around the high country back of Moanalua Valley. We may be able to spot rare lobelias in bloom along the summit ridge. Coordinators Kris Corliss & Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Nov 22 Sat 8AM PU’U HELEAKALA

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Nanakuli)

Climb steadily up this brushy slope, scrambling over the rocks, in a race to get to the top in the cool shade before the hot sun barbecues your face.  Enjoy the views and your lunch, then gradually descend the barren, rocky ridge.   A car shuttle will be required. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Nov 23 Sun 9AM LIKEKE

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Kane’ohe)

This trail was developed and left to us by the legendary Dick “Likeke” Davis for our enjoyment.  It skirts the bottom of the cliffs on the windward side between the Pali and Likelike tunnels.  Watch for the trail fruit at your feet while enjoying the spectacular vistas beyond. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Nov 30 Sun 8AM PU’U KA’AUMAKUA

(11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane)

If you put up with the long road walk, you may be amply rewarded with stunning views of the Ko’olau summit area. The lookout at the trail end was a favorite of hiking legend Al Miller. Coordinator Larry Lee, ph 263-4690.

Dec 6 Sat 8AM KA’ENA POINT

(4 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Kaena)

Note – All hikers will be assessed $2.00 to cover the new permit fee required for this hike.

On this hike, watch for the low flying albatross that nest in this protected area. Whales may be frolicking off shore while you enjoy the sound of crashing waves along the coastline and the wind in your hair. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Dec 7 Sun 8AM TRIPLER

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)

Another sojourn into lush Moanalua Valley, with a climb up one of the side ridges to the Ko’olau Summit.  Some of the trail may seem similar to Pu’u Keahi a Kahoe.  Summit views are superb, but keep your other eye on your footing along the narrow precipitous sections! Coordinator Kevin English, ph 271-5125.

Dec 14 Sun 8AM WAIMALU DITCH

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Waimalu)

Join us for this descent into Waimalu Valley where we follow the old water ditch trail to a pleasant swimming hole. Expect a few stream crossings and wet feet if this drought ever ends.  Eat a hearty lunch for the energy to climb back up and out. Coordinators Joyce & Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Dec 21 Sun 8AM PAUOA WOODS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Tantalus)

This hike's forte is variety. We'll hike along a contoured trail, descend a ridge-top trek, follow a valley pipeline and climb back up through a ti grove, over a waterfall and back to the contour again for a pleasant Sunday workout. Coordinator Steve Davis, Steve_Davis@ymail.com (preferred) or 371-1492.

Dec 28 Sun 9AM MEMBERS ONLY OLOMANA

No Meeting @ Palace – Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Olomana)

Our annual Christmas hike climbs the dike that forms the three peaks of Olomana on the windward side. The first and highest peak is exhilarating with a 360 degree view. The second peak is a bit more challenging, but the third peak is for dedicated hikers only, with definite exposure hazards. Choose wisely. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 388-5373.

Jan 1 Thu 8AM KOKO CRATER

No Meeting @ Palace – Park @ Sandy Beach & Meet @ Blowhole Parking Lot

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai’i Kai)

Our contribution to an alcohol-free New Year's Eve is the annual trek up Koko Crater early the next day. The slanted stone arch in the beginning only foretells the narrow, rocky path that partly circumnavigates the crater rim to the high point, for a well-earned lunch break and wonderful views of the south shore. Spotting whales is just a bonus for this hike. Then comes the descent down the old tramway rails and ties back to the cars. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Jan 3 Sat 8:30AM PU’U MA’ELI’ELI

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Kahalu’u)

A rather short trail on a very small ridge, but the views of Kane’ohe Bay with all its sandbars, Chinaman’s Hat, Coconut Island and Pu’u Kanehoalani are a camera buff’s delight. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Jan 4 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KAMAILE’UNU

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Ala Akau Street

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waianae)

It’s gonna be a glorious 2009 after this glorious 2nd hike of the year. Ya gotta get “junk yard dog mean” to ascend this honkin’ pile of shadeless rocks from sea level to 3000’ then turn around and hike back down with the setting sun in your face.  Oh, and did I mention the crumbly rocks and steep drop-offs? Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.
