Jan 1 Thu 8AM KOKO CRATER

No Meeting @ Palace – Park @ Sandy Beach & Meet @ Blowhole Parking Lot

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai’i Kai)

Our contribution to an alcohol-free New Year's Eve is the annual trek up Koko Crater early the next day. The slanted stone arch in the beginning only foretells the narrow, rocky path that partly circumnavigates the crater rim to the high point, for a well-earned lunch break and wonderful views of the south shore. Spotting whales is just a bonus for this hike. Then comes the descent down the old tramway and back to the cars via the shoreline. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Jan 3 Sat 8:30AM PU’U MA’ELI’ELI

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Kahalu’u)

A rather short trail on a very small ridge, but the views of Kane’ohe Bay with all its sandbars, Chinaman’s Hat, Coconut Island and Pu’u Kanehoalani are a camera buff’s delight. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Jan 4 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KAMAILE’UNU

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Ala Akau Street

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waianae)

It’s gonna be a glorious 2009 after this glorious 2nd hike of the year. Ya gotta get “junk yard dog mean” to ascend this honkin’ pile of shadeless rocks from sea level to 3,000’ then turn around and hike back down with the setting sun in your face.  Oh, and did I mention the crumbly rocks and steep drop-offs? Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.

Jan 11 Sun 8:30AM KUAOKALA RESERVATIONS REQUIRED – LIMIT OF 35

No Meeting @ Palace

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Makaha)

The majority of the elevation gain is by car, driving up a narrow military road to those mysterious "golf balls" above Yokohama Bay.  From there, a relatively level trail follows the Makua Valley rim, with beautiful views into the valley and along the Wai’anae coastline. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Jan 17 sat 8AM MAKAPU’U SCRAMBLE

(2 Mi/Advanced Novice/Hillside/Makapu’u)

We’ll walk the road up to the lookout above the lighthouse, and hope for whale sightings (bring your binoculars). An option on the return is to scramble down the steep fisherman’s “trail” to the rock shelf and tide pools. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Jan 18 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U ‘OHULEHULE

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Kahana Valley State Park parking lot

(8 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)

Ever wonder what's on top of that pointed peak you see when driving toward Kualoa? Here's your chance to find out!  The climb to the top is steep (repeat STEEP!) with precipitous drop-offs, so be forewarned. But if you make it, a surprise may await you at the "point". Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Jan 25 Sun 8AM WAILUPE LOOP

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Aina Haina)

This loopy hike begins with a long grinding uphill climb, then crosses the razor-thin summit ridge with its sheer drop offs, before plunging back into the valley to complete the loop. Be prepared to swing from tree to tree like a monkey! Coordinator Jay Feldman, ph 234-9069.

Jan 31 Sat 8AM WAIMANO POOL

(3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Pacific Palisades)

An easy hike (except for coming back up Cardiac Hill) leading to a series of small pools, waterfalls and a shady forest for a relaxing day. Just follow Uncle Phil. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Feb 1 Sun 8:30 AM MEMBERS ONLY WAI’ANAE-KA’ALA

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Wai’anae Steve’s

(8 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wai’anae)

This trail to the highest point on O’ahu begins at the end of Wai’anae Valley Road and traverses several ridgelets. Once on the main ridge, be careful of the big boulder before you reach the summit. Ka’ala is a montane bog with a fragile ecosystem protected by a boardwalk. Please do not stray from the trail. Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

Feb 8 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole)

A favorite for lush tropical hiking beside (and across) a rushing stream. The bird’s nest ferns nestled in the trees are a sight to behold. Bug repellant is highly recommended. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 263-8330.

Feb 14 Sat MOKULE’IA CAMPOUT – LIMIT OF 15 – RESERVATIONS REQUIRED BY JAN 31 – PARTICIPATION IS SUBJECT TO THE COORDINATOR’S APPROVAL

An up and down, highly scenic hike along the rim of Makua Valley leads to an idyllic campsite nestled below the Wai’anae summit. On the middle day, hike to Three Corners, Peacock Flat, or just laze around camp. The closest water source is a small stream that dries up during drought conditions. Coordinator Larry Lee, ph 263-4690.

Feb 15 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY MAKUA RIM

No Meeting @ Palace – Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Mokuleia)

We’ll follow the Mokuleia Trail to the Waianae Summit and turn right along the rim of Makua Valley to the Nike site. Highlights include the Piko pines, loulu palms, enclosed native snail habitats, and a superb rim overlook. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Feb 21 Sat 8:30AM WAIMEA VALLEY

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Waimea)

No Meeting @ Palace. Meet @ the 1st parking lot on the right, before the public lot.

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Waimea)

Join us for a hike up Kamananui Valley, over the middle ridge and down ‘Elehaha Valley. There are a lot of stream crossings on this shady, probably muddy hike, but not much up and down. If we have heavy rain at the time, we may change to a ridge hike at the last minute. Expect mosquitoes. An additional $5 fee per person for the Center is required. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Feb 21 Sat 9AM to Noon CLUBHOUSE WORKDAY

Come on out & help to put the finishing touches on our Waimanalo Clubhouse, following the renovation project. We want to have it in top-top shape for next week’s open house.

Feb 22 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY BOWMAN

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kalihi)

Bowman is probably the most difficult of the ungraded Ko’olau ridge hikes. The route starts with a steep climb, ends with a sharp descent, and has nothing but ups and downs in between. When you reach the summit, you may need to spend some time there to get a view. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.

Feb 28 Sat 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY  KANEHOA HAPAPA

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15

No Meeting @ Palace

(9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge-Contour/Kunia)

Portions of our route pass through areas with sensitive ecosystems, hence our need to limit the number of hikers, thereby reducing the impact to the area. Native plants and spectacular views along the Wai’anae summit make this a very special hike. Coordinator Kevin English, ph 271-5125.

Feb 28 Sat 5PM CLUBHOUSE POTLUCK / SLIDESHOW / OPEN HOUSE

(Potluck @ 5PM) Join your hiking friends for a potluck, and take a tour of our newly renovated Waimanalo clubhouse! Met Lebar will share a slide show and a video, presenting a blend of culture, hiking and kayaking adventures in Thailand and Laos. These are still great, pristine and inexpensive places to visit, before the fast pace of economic development in Asia brings them in line with the more popular destinations. Bring a potluck dish to share.  RSVP via Email (preferred) HTMCEntertainment@yahoo.com or call Bev at 384-5100. Non-members pay $2 to attend.

Mar 1 Sun 8AM KEALIA

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Hillside/Mokule’ia)

The route changes each year, so cut the gab and watch for those ribbons. Whichever way we go, expect steep climbing, panoramic vistas, and many twists and turns. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Mar 8 Sun 8AM WAIMANO

(14 Mi/Advanced/Contour/Pearl City)

This combination ditch and CCC trail is our longest official hike. However, as the footing is good, and the grade is easy, the miles just come and go, and before you know it you're on top. Coordinator Karen Liliker, ph 349-8336.

Mar 14 Sat 8AM MT. OLYMPUS

(6 Mi/ Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis Hts.)

A favorite “town” hike with easy access and superb views.  The trail starts with a few ups and downs then climbs steeply to the summit where a small but nice lunch spot with views of the windward side awaits your presence. Coordinator Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384.

Mar 15 Sun 8AM MAKIKI TANTALIZER

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

This hike is a combination of seven trails in the Tantalus area that form a loop. Start on Kanealole, across Makiki Valley, up Nahuina, along Kalawahine and Pauoa Flats to the Nu’uanu Valley lookout, continue on Manoa Cliff, down Moleka, across Makiki Valley and down Maunalaha back to the starting point. Features - woodsy strolls, views of Manoa & Nu’uanu Valleys. Extra points if you memorize all the trail names <grin>. Coordinator Steve Davis, Steve_Davis@ymail.com (preferred) or 371-1492.

Mar 21 Sat 5PM CLUBHOUSE POTLUCK / SLIDESHOW

(Potluck @ 5PM) Join your hiking friends for a potluck at our Waimanalo clubhouse. Nathan Yuen will show photos of the native plants and animals found in rain forests, cloud forests, bogs, and other unusual Hawaiian ecosystems.  He will also give a photographic history of the early years of the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club from archival photos from the Bishop Museum and other sources. Bring a potluck dish to share.  RSVP via Email (preferred) HTMCEntertainment@yahoo.com or call Bev at 384-5100. Non-members pay $2 to attend.

Mar 22 Sun 8AM MOANALUA

(10 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Moanalua)

This is an excursion into the tranquil and historic Moanalua Valley, formerly the home of the Damon family.  A combination of dirt roads and jungle trails leads leisurely (with one steep climb) to the Ko’olau summit, overlooking Ha’iku Valley.  There are numerous stream crossings, so expect wet feet. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

Mar 28 Sat 8:30AM PUPUKEA SUMMIT

No Meeting @ Palace. Meet 0830 at the top of Pupukea Road.

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pupukea)

Yes, it’s a long drive and a long walk up a dirt road before we get to do this short hike but,,,, this is THE start of the infamous Ko’olau Summit Trail.  On the return leg we will take the Kaunala Trail just for fun. Coordinators Joyce & Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Mar 29 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KEA’AU RIDGE

No Meeting @ Palace. Meet 0830 at Makaha Surfing Beach Parking Lot.

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Keaau)

Join Pat for a walk on the wild side and a 2,800’ elevation gain.  A long walk up a dirt road and then a confusing ramble brings you to Kea’au Ridge where the serious climbing begins.  The ridge ends with views of Makaha Valley as Pu’u ‘Ohikilolo beckons you from the “oh so close” next ridge. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 342-0617.

Apr 4 Sat 8:30AM MALAEKAHANA LOOP

No Meeting @ Palace. Meet 0830 at the La’ie Community soccer field.

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/La’ie)

After a pleasant drive out to the country, take a wonderful circuitous romp thru the backwoods. A good hiking workout but stay alert as the numerous twists and turns define the correct route. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 388-5373.

Apr 5 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING

Come out to Waimanalo to enjoy our “country” setting and visit with other HTMC members who are excited about planning the club’s direction for the next several years. Check out our newly renovated clubhouse and hear more about preparations for our centennial celebration. At our meeting you’ll be able to vote on two expiring Board member positions, and you may want to become more involved in the centennial celebration planning. Much is starting to happen, and you don’t want to miss out on the excitement. See ya there!
