Schedule of Hikes and Events for
Oct. - Nov. - Dec. 2009

A $3.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call  Mike Algiers, 422-1048. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.

We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times.

Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry maps. Firearms and pets are prohibited on hikes.

Oct 4 Sun 8AM PAUOA WOODS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Tantalus)

This mixed plate hike rambles through various terrain & vegetation zones in the Tantalus area. Some sections are level & wide, others are steep & narrow. Experience native forest, bamboo groves, and guava thickets. Watch for ancient rock walls, and critical junctions. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

 

Oct 10 Sat 9AM LIKEKE

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Kane’ohe)

Follow in the footsteps of legendary mountain man Dick Davis, who singlehandedly built the Likeke Trail in the 1960s. The loop route contours around the base of the Ko’olau cliffs to a small, but reliable waterfall and then meanders back to the starting point in Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden. Meet @ 7:30 @ the Palace or 8:30 at Steve’s house

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wai’anae)

Ramble across most of Waianae Valley, from the Lualualei overlook to Ala Kepau ridge (where the road and trail end).  You'll see coffee, ironwood, lemon eucalyptus, allspice, sisal, and other strange sights such as streams w/running water, terraces built by the ancient Hawaiians and the house site of the Waianae Plantation manager.  Just follow the yellow markers, or you may get lost at the many intersections. Oct 17 6PM APPRECIATION NIGHT (By Invitation Only) Our annual Mahalo evening to honor the hike coordinators, trail maintenance crew, directors and committee members is our way of expressing our appreciation for all their kokua. Oct 18 Sun 8AM PUPUKEA SUMMIT

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pupukea)

A long road walk and a short romp gets us deep into the wild and muddy hills of Pupukea and the start of the infamous Ko’olau Summit Trail. Our return route takes us through the winding Kaunala Trail. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

(10 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Moanalua)

After a long, but pleasant road walk, we follow the left fork of Kamananui Stream on the recently renamed Kulana’ahane Trail. At the top is a good view of Ha’iku Valley and the Stairway to Heaven. Coordinator Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

Meet: 8AM @ the Palace, or 9AM @ Nanakuli Mall

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Ma’ili)

A steep, rocky climb leads to several bunkers where soldiers once searched for enemy targets for the gun batteries near Kapolei. Return down an old switchback trail used by mules to carry supplies to the observation posts. Coordinator Fred Dodge, ph 696-4677.

No Meeting @ Palace. Meet 0830 at Makaha Surfing Beach Parking Lot.

Join Pat for a walk on the wild side and a 2,800’ elevation gain.  A long walk up a dirt road and then a confusing ramble brings you to Kea’au Ridge where the serious climbing begins.  The ridge ends with views of Makaha Valley as Pu’u ‘Ohikilolo beckons you from the “oh so close” next ridge. Nov 8 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole)

A favorite for lush tropical hiking. The bird’s nest ferns nestled in the trees are a sight to behold. Pay attention to the ribbons marking the meandering route as we criss-cross Waianu stream, and edge along narrow hillside trails. Bug repellant is highly recommended. Nov 14 Sat 8AM HALAPEPE NUI

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Pearl City)

A fairly easy, rambling loop hike (not much up and down) with spectacular views of Pearl Harbor and the upper Waimano watershed. Lots of uluhe, and many trail junctions – long pants and common sense required. Plan to stay with the group. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

(4 Mi/Novice/Hillside/Hauula)

This double loop provides a light workout on the uphills and pleasant woodsy trails with occasional coastal views. Use caution at the slippery stream crossings. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Kahana Valley State Park parking lot

(8 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)

This is your chance to scale that pyramidal peak which visually dominates the windward coast from Kahaluu to Kualoa.  It starts with a pleasant stroll in Kahana valley (3 stream crossings), then gets steeper and STEEPER!  Some treacherous sections, but a great view on top! Nov 29 Sun 8AM MAKIKI TANTALIZER

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

The Makiki area is a maze of trails. There's Makiki Valley, Moleka, Nahuina, Ualakaa, Kaneolole, Maunalaha and Manoa Cliff. Follow Thea and Justin as they wend their way through it all. No bread crumbs allowed. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

 

Dec 5 Sat 8AM KA’ENA POINT

(4 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Kaena)

Kaena, the western-most point of Oahu is a designated Natural Area Reserve with rugged coastlines, endangered flora, sleeping Hawaiian seals (sometimes) and occasional booby birds and albatrosses. This shoreline trail is level, but hot. Bring lots of water. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

 

Dec 6 Sun 8AM LANIPO

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaimuki)

This popular hike receives heavy usage, which has created some slippery eroded areas in the steeper sections. The trail undulates, with lots of ups & downs (mostly ups?) and eventually reaches the Ko’olau summit, where the reward is a great view! A long walk on a dirt road leads to a beautiful contour trail which climbs steadily to the Ko’olau summit and Pu’u Ka’amakua (family deity hill) at 2,681 ft.  Marvel at the panoramic windward coastline view from above Waikane valley. Coordinator Kevin English, ph 271-5125.

 

Dec 20 Sun 8AM ‘ILIAHI RIDGE

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Pacific Palisades)

Follow the Ralph as he leads us down one ridge and up another to a breezy lunch spot high above Pearl City.  It’s the reverse route on the return so expect the same tough workout coming back. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

This traditional December hike takes up the challenge of the three peaks of Olomana, which stand like the three Wise Men above Kailua.  The peaks become progressively more difficult, and the 3rd is for expert hiker/climbers, so pick your level of comfort.  Watch for mistletoe along the way! Start our centennial year off right with a heart pounding climb and breathtaking views.  Enjoy HTMC camaraderie and no hangover. Hazards: inclines, steep dropoffs, crumbly rock, narrow sections. This mean honkin’ pile of rocks sits in the blazing hot sun and reaches up 3,000’. Start off the new year by clambering up and back down this peak on a path where wild goats dread to tread. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.
