Jan 1 Fri 8AM KOKO CRATER 100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace – Park @ Sandy Beach & Meet @ Blowhole Parking Lot

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai’i Kai)

Start our centennial year off right with a heart pounding climb and breathtaking views.  Enjoy HTMC camaraderie and no hangover. Hazards: inclines, steep dropoffs, crumbly rock, narrow sections. Not suitable for those with a fear of heights. The club first hiked this trail on July 3, 1932. Coordinators Darrell Teruya and Jennie Chadbourne, ph 227-4572.

Jan 3 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KAMAILE’UNU

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Ala Akau Street

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waianae)

This mean honkin’ pile of rocks sits in the blazing hot sun and reaches up 3,000’. Start off the new year by clambering up and back down this peak on a path where wild goats dread to tread. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.

Jan 10 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY WAI’ANAE WATER WORKS

Meet @ 7AM @ the Palace or 8AM at Steve’s house

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Waianae)

We’ll follow steep, muddy trails, and roads built to access the rain forest, alongside flumes & pipe lines that bring water down to the fields. An optional route is through a 400’ long tunnel where your feet will get wet, and you’ll need a flashlight. Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

Jan 16 Sat 8AM MAKAPU’U SCRAMBLE

(2 Mi/Advanced Novice/Hillside/Makapu’u)

A scenic route takes us to the lighthouse view point. We may see a whale or two. For the adventurous, there’s an optional scramble down a fisherman’s trail to the rock shelf and tide pools at the ocean’s edge (ocean conditions permitting). Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Jan 17 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U O KONA 100-Mi

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuliouou)

HTMC first hiked this steep & intimidating trail on January 18, 1920, and upon reaching the Ko’olau Summit, they gazed down on the empty sand dunes of Waimanalo, where they would soon be building our Clubhouse.  The view has changed since then, but it's still spectacular...and the trail is still steep ! Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

Jan 24 Sun 8:30 AM KUAOKALA 100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED – LIMIT OF 35

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Makaha)

The radar domes and the paved roads are new additions since this trail was first hiked by HTMC on November 27, 1927, but the panoramic views are unchanged.  As you hike this contoured (moderately level) dry-land trail around the rim of Makua Valley, let the miles and years slip away. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

Jan 30 Sat 8AM KULI’OU’OU VALLEY

(2 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kuli’ou’ou)

An easy walk in the woods as we follow the usually dry stream into the valley.  Keep watch for the nests of the elusive Elepaio high in the trees.  Perch on a fallen log to peck away at your lunch. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Jan 31 Sun 8:30 AM MEMBERS ONLY MAKAPUU TOM-TOM 100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at the Clubhouse

(4 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Makapu’u)

Tread the footsteps of HTMC hikers who first did this hike on June 4, 1920. Not for the faint of heart, this is a steady grind up a rubbly slope and a traverse along the ridge line with steep drop offs.  Pause to see the magnificent views of the Windward Coast and Sea Life Park thru the hole in the rock.  Watch your footing as you descend steeply into Waimanalo, then a short walk to the HTM Clubhouse. Coordinator Karen Liliker, ph 349-8336.

Feb 6 Sat 8AM MO’O KAPU O HALOA CIRCUIT

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hakipu’u-Ka’a’awa)

Our route leads up Hakipu’u Valley to a low saddle that will take us over a muddy, steep trail into spectacular Ka’a’awa Valley, the filming site of Jurassic Park and other movies. Aside from the climb over the saddle, the hike is on jeep roads and is easy walking. Bring $5.00 extra for the fee to the ranch.  We may be able to visit the photo gallery in the old military bunkers near the end of the hike. Coordinator John Hall (377-5442)

Feb 7 Sun 8AM PAUOA WOODS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Tantalus)

Pauoa is a mixed-plate hike. Ridge line, pipe-line, valley stream, waterfall, hill scramble, all-in-one for a Hawaiian sampler day. An aerobic intro to our local woods. Coordinator Steve Davis, Steve_Davis@ymail.com (preferred) or 371-1492.

Feb 13-15 Sat-Mon  MOKULE’IA CAMPOUT – LIMIT OF 15 – RESERVATIONS REQUIRED BY JAN 31 – PARTICIPATION IS SUBJECT TO THE COORDINATOR’S APPROVAL

An up and down, highly scenic hike along the rim of Makua Valley leads to an idyllic campsite nestled below the Wai’anae summit. On the middle day, hike to Three Corners, Peacock Flat, or just laze around camp. The closest water source is a small stream that dries up during drought conditions. Coordinator Larry Lee, ph 263-4690.

Feb 14 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY THREE CORNERS 100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Mokule’ia)

Our goal is a broad hill on the Wai’anae Range at 2,600 ft elevation where three valleys converge, featuring a fabulous panorama of the north shore, Mount Ka’ala, the Leeward Coast and Makua Valley. You’ll be able to enjoy the Mokuleia Trail on the way there. Coordinator Kevin English, ph 271-5125.

Feb 20 Sat POTLUCK & TALK STORY (Potluck @ 5PM)

Join your hiking friends for a potluck. Share stories of your hiking trails, and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow hikers. Please bring a potluck dish to share. RSVP via Email (preferred) HTMCEntertainment@yahoo.com or call Bev at 384-5100. Non-members pay normal clubhouse fee to attend.

Feb 21 Sun 7:30AM WAI’ANAE KAI 100-Mi

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Waianae)

This picturesque rambling loop hike on the ridges and valleys below Mt. Kaala includes a steep uphill and a steep downhill. Watch for the critical junctions to insure a safe return. The club first hiked this trail on July 15, 1928. Coordinator Jennie Chadbourne, ph 224-8018.

Feb 27 Sat 8AM KALUANUI RIDGE

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Hawaii Kai)

Follow the leader up this popular and short route to the summit at the eastern end of the Koolau Range. Enjoy wonderful views with many photo ops as we gain elevation.  This should be a memorable group experience. Coordinators Joyce & Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Feb 28 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KAWAIIKI

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hale’iwa)

Return with us to another special hike in the Koolau watershed above Haleiwa. It’s been 15 years since we hiked this stream trail. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 342-0617.

Mar 6 Sat 8AM KAWA’EWA’E

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kane’ohe)

Check out the interesting new contour route that Dayle & Jacque added to this hike, based on Dick Davis’ old trail. The hike includes strolls through Friendship Gardens, as well as ridge and narrow trail scrambling. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Mar 7 Sun 7:30AM KEALIA

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Hillside/Mokule’ia)

After zigzagging up the Kealia pali, the hike turns into a long, but scenic loop on a confusing network of dirt roads and trails. HTMC first hiked this CCC trail on February 17, 1935 shortly after its completion. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 388-5373.

Mar 14 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY GODEK-JASKULSKI RIDGE

(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)

This scenic scramble was developed by two HTMC hiking legends, Chuck Godek and Erwin "Skipoles" Jaskulski. The up and down route follows the north ridge of Moanalua Valley to the Ko’olau summit. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Mar 20 Sat 8AM WILIWILINUI

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Wai’alae)

The good news is that it's mostly a 4WD road walk and quite lovely with the first two steep, eroded sections of the trail terraced with man-made steps.  The bad news is that on the final ascent to the Ko’olau crest the upper two exposed sections have turned into a trench with no terraced steps with only a rope to assist you.  Would you believe this trail was first hiked by the club on March 20, 1920? Coordinator Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

Mar 20 Sat 9AM to Noon CLUBHOUSE WORKDAY

Come on out to help with a few projects which are always needed to keep our Waimanalo Clubhouse in top-top shape.

Mar 20 Sat  POTLUCK & SLIDESHOW (Potluck @ 5PM)

In September of 2009, seven HTMC members traveled to Europe to hike the popular Haute Route trail. Join them this evening at the Clubhouse as they share their photos of the 20 day adventure, hiking roughly 110 miles from Chamonix France to Zermatt Switzerland. Please bring a potluck dish to share. RSVP via Email (preferred) HTMCEntertainment@yahoo.com or call Bev at 384-5100. Non-members pay normal clubhouse fee to attend.

Mar 21 Sun 8AM WAILUPE LOOP 100-Mi

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Aina Haina)

It's a steep, lung busting climb to the crest of the Ko’olau from the valley; cross over the narrow, windswept, summit ridge with death drops; and at the Wiliwilinui ridge summit make your way down the slippery, clay-like dirt trail with a rope to assist you. Watch for pink ribbons along the 4WD road that will loop you back to the valley. Coordinator Jay Feldman, ph 234-9069.

Mar 28 Sun 8AM MANANA

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades)

All hikers will enjoy this magnificent ridge walk. Beginners can stroll through the level, lower section. Intermediates can turn around at the scenic helipad. Hardcore hikers can head for the summit and a chance at a windward view. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 778-8629.

Apr 4 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING

Join your fellow HTMC members when they help to turn another page in the latest chapter of the club's history.  Wouldn't you like to be there when we convene the annual meeting that marks, almost to the day, 100 years since HTMC's incorporation on April 5, 1910. This is a big deal and you can be a part of an event that has historical significance for our island state. There will be club business to handle, but our minds and hearts will be focusing on our 100 years of hiking in Hawai’i.
