Jul 18 Sun 7:30AM KOLOA GULCH 100-Mi

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La’ie)

This hike first takes us up a ridge then we drop down a side trail to Koloa Stream. Abundant native plants and maybe some mountain apples greet us as we criss-cross the stream into the valley. A short swim and a small climb will get you to the destination waterfall and plunge pool.

Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

Jul 24 Sat 8AM TANTALUS RAMBLE 100-Mi

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

Here’s a bit of old fashioned exploring as we ramble around the various trails on Mt. Tantalus. Uncle Phil stitches a mosaic of meandering paths that somehow takes us from beginning to end without getting us lost – do pay attention to his directions on this fun adventure. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

A fun, looping adventure with a great workout and fabulous water hole.  Pay attention to the trail junctions so you don’t get lost in the labyrinth of the undulating hills and stream crossings.  Be prepared for mud, mosquitoes & memories of departed fellow hikers. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Aug 7 Sat 8AM LUA’ALAEA

(2 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Manoa)

This diversion off the more pedestrian Manoa Falls Trail brings the adventurer to terms with swarms of mosquitoes, complex trail junctions, scrambles through thickets, hidden cascades and the serenity of a remote corner of the rainforest. Coordinator Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

Aug 8 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY – LANIHULI 100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kapalama)

An early start is required for this long tough hike along the Kapalama ridgeline. Few have ever stood on Pu’u Lanihuli. Allow plenty of time for the return which will be just as tough as the ascent. Coordinator Kevin English, ph 271-5125.

Aug 15 Sun7:30AM KAHANA VALLEY 100-Mi

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)

This intricate double loop wanders through a vast, undeveloped windward valley. Watch closely for the many junctions and wade gingerly across the fast flowing stream. HTMC first hiked Kahana on July 4, 1920 as part of a Ko’olau traverse from the Schofield side. Coordinator Larry Lee, ph 263-4690.

Aug 22 Sun 7:30AM LA’IE 100-Mi

(10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La’ie)

Little has changed since HTMC first hiked this lengthy contour trail on October 6, 1935.  The lower portion is still a hot, dusty, jeep road, and the upper portion is a cool native forest.  Midway along, a short detour to a delightful waterfall pool is an option. Coordinator Karen Liliker, ph 349-8336.

Aug 28 Sat 8AM PU’U MA’ELI’ELI

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Kahalu’u)

A relatively easy jaunt in the windward Ko’olau foothills provides nice views of the coastline on one side, and the fluted Ko’olau wall on the other. Check out the new route pioneered by Dayle & Jacque Turner. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 778-8629.

Aug 29 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U MANAMANA

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Swanzy Beach parking lot

Sep 5 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KAWAINUI 100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hale’iwa)

After a long hiatus, HTMC has regained access to this wonderful valley trail in the Ko’olau foothills above Hale’iwa.  It follows Kawainui stream to one of the largest freshwater pools on O’ahu.  We'll be driving through locked gates as a group, so no early departures, please. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

Sep 11 Sat 8AM HAU’ULA PAPALI 100-Mi

(4 Mi/Novice/Hillside/Hauula)

Two windward ridges connected in a loop hike provide a day in rural Oahu. Ocean views, valley trails and forested ridges yield a good, but not too difficult workout. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Sep 11 Sat POTLUCK / SLIDESHOW (Potluck @ 5PM) Nathan Yuen will present 100 years of hiking with HTMC. Please bring a potluck dish to share. RSVP via Email (preferred) HTMCEntertainment@yahoo.com or call Bev at 384-5100. Non-members pay normal clubhouse fee to attend.

Sep 12 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAWAILOA RIDGE100-Mi

No Meeting @ Palace

(13 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Hale’iwa)

Although the access has improved, Kawailoa is still a bear of a hike - long, rough, and muddy. In its heyday in the 1930s, this route was one of the CCC's finest "sidewalk" trails to the Ko’olau summit. HTMC first hiked the trail on May 12, 1935, about six months after its completion. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Sep 19 Sun 8AM LANIPO 100-Mi

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaimuki)

A popular “town” ridge hike with plenty of ups and downs along the way to the crest of the Ko’olau summit.  Stash some water along the way for the return. Coordinator Jay Feldman, ph 234-9069.

Sep 25 Sat 8AM TREASURE HUNT

(? Mi/Intermediate/?/?)

Join us for a different kind of event. There will be some hiking involved, along with puzzle solving. Teams will compete to be the first to find and decipher all the clues. Since part of the initial task is to determine where to go on the island, no information will be provided beforehand about the general location. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Sep 26 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU 100-Mi

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole)

The trail loops through the lush vegetation of Waiahole Valley, crossing Waianu stream twice (expect wet feet).  HTMC members first hiked this trail, which follows the old irrigation tunnel system, on Sept 26, 1920, and they probably shared the cobblestones with pack-mule traffic.  Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459

Oct 2 Sat 9AM to Noon CLUBHOUSE WORKDAY

Come on out to help with a few projects which will keep our Waimanalo Clubhouse in tip-top shape.

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Wai’anae Steve’s

(8 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wai’anae)

A short but very steep trail, which ascends O’ahu's highest peak (4,025 ft.).  Extra caution and a bit of climbing are required in spots.  At the summit, explore the Ka’ala bog, and possibly enjoy a fabulous view, clouds permitting (rare). Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.
