Schedule of Hikes and Events for
January - February - March  2012

A $3.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call  Mike Algiers, 422-1048. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.

We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times.

Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry maps. Firearms and pets are prohibited on hikes.

We greet the New Year with an old hike. Stone arches, steep slopes and narrow stone steps keep the ole heart pounding as we clamber to the top of the crater for a well-deserved brunch. We'll climb the switchbacks up the pali and then loop around the roads and trails of the Kuaokala Forest Reserve. Watch the ribbons closely to stay on course. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

You'll climb steeply to the western ridge of Moanalua Valley, then follow the ridge nearly to the summit before dropping back to the valley floor. Portions of the trail are steep (ascending and descending), and very precipitous in sections. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

A long paved road walk leads to the fabled Ko’olau Summit Trail. Our goal is not Kipapa, or even La’ie, but a lofty lookout near the old Hina benchmark. This strenuous hike is a real workout for the legs & lungs! Lots of steep ups & downs along the spine of the Ko’olau ridge high above Waimanalo, with continuous panoramic views. Feb 5 Sun 8:30AM WAI’ANAE WATER–WALLS–WATER

Hike along two flowing streams, one on the way up and the other on the way down. Along the streams you will see pre-contact agricultural terraces as well as dams built by Wai’anae Sugar Company 100 years ago. Hiking across the upper valley you'll see both pre and post contact sites. There is one waterfall that is a bit dangerous but has a bypass trail around it. Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

Check out the interesting new contour route that Dayle & Jacque added to this hike, based on Dick Davis’ old trail. The hike includes strolls through Friendship Gardens, as well as ridge and narrow trail scrambling. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 729-3811 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Reservations will be accepted beginning January 3 at 8:30AM. Reservations made or posted before this time will not be accepted.
Spend the long weekend at a secluded campsite nestled below the Wai’anae summit. Laze around camp or take a strenuous hike around the rim of Makua Valley on the layover day. Bring warm clothing, good raingear, and a serious sleeping bag, as the weather is often unpredictable during the winter. Coordinator Larry Lee, ph 263-4690.

Our route changes from year to year, but we will definitely reach Three Corners, a highly scenic overlook at the top of ‘Ohikilolo ridge. Here the ahupua’a of Makua, Makaha, and Mokule’ia come together along the Wai’anae crest. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

A hike along the north rim of Makua Valley provides a good workout with many spots to stop and enjoy the spectacular views. Our turnaround point is the overlook near the back of the valley. Will we go up? or go down? This trail within trails combines a steep stretch with a level contour through an airy forest for an interesting Saturday workout. But which part first? Only coordinator Justin knows, so follow his ribbons carefully. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 778-8629.

Join your friends and fellow hikers out at the Clubhouse this Saturday morning, and help do a little yard work, window washing, light housecleaning, simple carpentry, or painting. Pick the job that's right for you, and we'll get our property spruced up! Cold drinks and light snacks will be provided....and you might also want to bring your swimsuit and take a refreshing dip afterward!

This hike is a steep climb up to the highest point on O’ahu where the scenic rewards are very dependent on the weather.  The native plants in the Ka’ala bog at the summit love the cool, moist climate.  Expect a steep and muddy trail that requires extreme caution on many sections. Don't be put off by the advanced rating. Beginners as well as experts can enjoy this ridge route that starts out easy and gets more difficult the farther you go. Coordinator Jay Feldman, jay.feldman@htmclub.org or 234-9069.

This hike leads to a stream with a series of pools which are a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or a refreshing dip. Hiking in is mostly downhill, but the return trip is a steep climb up aptly named "cardiac hill". Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

This is a route up a brushy and sometimes crumbly side ridge that overlooks the mauka portion of Makaha Valley. Pu’u ‘Ohikilolo beckons you from the distant ridge. Bring plenty of water and don’t leave anything valuable in your car. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

After an historical valley stroll, we climb steeply to Tripler ridge and follow it all the way to the Ko’olau summit. Along the route are unusual native plants and awesome views, weather permitting. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.

Waimanalo Clubhouse
This year April Fools' Day coincides with our Annual Meeting. To celebrate, after the meeting there will be raffle prizes and "just desserts". The meeting and elections will be kept as brief as possible so that we may enjoy a festive afternoon together. Raffle tickets will be issued to members before the meeting starts. Bring your favorite dessert (ambrosia, baklava, cake, compote, cookies, flan, frozen desserts, fruit, gelato,  mochi,  mousse, pie, smoothies, tartufo, tortes, zabaglione, etc.) for the post meeting blast. We have freezer space, a working oven, microwave, and a blender - coffee and tea will be provided.

"Are we there yet?" is the motto for this hike as we scramble from one false summit to yet another. The air gets cooler (and you get hotter) as we ascend to the Ko’olau summit. Coordinator Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

A strenuous hike that meanders through Kahana Valley then steeply climbs up to a small peak. A short steep descent brings us back down to the valley trail system.
