Maunawili Falls

Location: - Maunawili Valley
Access: - First part over private land - no permission required. Second part on State public trail.
Hazards:

Directions to trailhead: - From Honolulu on Pali Highway to Maunawili Valley (third traffic light after tunnels), turn right on Auloa Road, left fork onto Maunawili Road. Go approx 2 miles to end of public road, park on Kelewina Street. Walk on Maunawili Road (private section) approx 1/2 city block to trail head sign on right.

Hike directions: - From trailhead, take trail to 1st stream crossing (right side); cross and follow trail which parallels stream. Go past 10 feet high Torch Ginger to 2nd stream crossing (left side). Cross and continue on cobbled trail to 3rd stream crossing (right side). Cross and follow trail (left) along stream. Note sign marking beginning of State trail (0.7 miles). Continue on trail, turn right to ascend hillside to ridgetop on rustic steps. Continue left on ridge to trail sign on left pointing down hillside. Continue down rustic steps to streambed. Follow main stream towards Bamboo grove and beyond to Maunawili Falls with 60-80 feet diameter swimming hole. Approximate time one way - 1 hour. Return in reverse order.

Hike description: -Maunawili Falls is a large swimming hole fed by a 20+ feet high waterfall. The pool is deep, but rock strewn. **Do Not** jump in from the rocks without checking under the surface first! The trail is easy and very popular with local children. Expect to get muddy stream crossing and on the trail. Be aware that *all* naturally existing water source can contain Leptospirosis or other micro-organisms. Be cautious if you have open skin cuts, etc.
